Jan Åge Riseth, born 1953, Norway, is a Nature Manager (M.Sc., 1979) and an Institutional Economist (Ph.D., 2000) having additional training in spatial planning, public management and legal history. He was a Vice Director for the Norwegian Government’s Agency for Reindeer Herd Management 1981-1990, and has later worked as a Municipal planner, University College Professor and an Institute Researcher. He was a visiting scholar at Indiana University, Bloomington, working with the Nobel Prize Laureate Elinor Ostrom in 1996. Since 2002 he has been a senior research scientist at the Northern Research Institute (NORUT, Tromsø, Norway) with an adjunct position at the Sámi University College (2003-2010).

He has published (about) 50 research reports, 40 conference contributions, 10 peer-reviewed articles, 20 book chapters and written/co-edited 5 books, also having 30 popular contributions. Most of his research is interdisciplinary and cover the fields of reindeer herd management, indigenous perspectives on protected areas, traditional ecological knowledge, impact assessment and climate change. His research interests include reindeer management, nature management and protection, sustainable resource use, modernization, climate change, and traditional/indigenous knowledge.
